Göta Canal Charter

Guest harbors along the Göta Canal

A first trip on the Göta Canal is exciting, you probably don’t know what awaits you after the next bend. A bridge, a lock or a long straight stretch? That’s part of the charm. However, it can be reassuring to know where the next stop for an overnight stay, or bunkering (as it is called in maritime language) is. Along the Göta Canal, there are no less than 21 guest harbors that are included in the canal fee you pay when you rent a boat. What they have in common is that they offer all the facilities you need for a comfortable trip at no extra cost: water, shore power, septic tank emptying station, fresh water, toilets, showers, laundry facilities, tourist information, etc.
In addition, you will find free jetties where you can stay overnight and several guest and natural harbors in Vättern where the fee is very modest. Vadstena and Stenbryggan in Karlsborg are two examples. Below you will find our recommended guest harbors. Keep an eye out for our bases where you start or end your trip and the ports we recommend for overnight stays and bunkering. Our journey here is from east to west, but if you’re going the other way, you’ll find just as much to gain from our port tips.

Our marinas

Söderköping

Kanalhamnen in Söderköping is one of the canal’s most popular ports with restaurants, cafés and summer shops.

Göta Kanal Charter recommends: Close to grocery stores and Systembolaget. There are many cozy restaurants to choose from along the canal. Ice cream at “Smultronstället” round trip train etc.

Mountain

Bergs Slussar is the biggest attraction on the Göta Canal, attracting thousands of spectators. The area has restaurants, cafés, adventure golf, hostels with bike rental, etc. 40 guest places. Below Carl Johan’s lock stairs there are 10 guest places with electricity, water and service house with toilets and showers.

Göta Kanal Charter recommends: Natural stop for overnight stay, see route plan. Five minutes walk to ICA Nära.

Borensberg

Guest harbor in the canal community Borensberg. Here is one of the two locks along the Göta Canal that are operated by hand in the old way. 20 guest places.

Göta Kanal Charter recommends: This is likely to be your second overnight stay, or your second to last if you are traveling east. Outstanding service facility and close to both eateries and grocery stores.

Motala workshop

This is where your canal trip starts and ends. A small newly built marina with good facilities such as showers, toilets, parking etc.

Göta Kanal Charter recommends: Göta Kanal’s own museum, coffee at “Mallbodens café”, restaurant “Berggrens källare”, grocery stores approx: 500m from the harbor.

Vadstena

Vadstena is not included in AB Göta Kanalbolaget’s guest harbors, but thanks to Göta Kanal Charter you have free access to the guest harbor which is directly adjacent to Vadstena Castle. From here it is only a few minutes walk to the center with cozy shopping and everything you need to stock up for the continued journey. Of course, there are also a large number of sights such as the castle, Vadstena monastery, Slottsgården with the Toy Museum etc.

Göta Kanal Charter recommends: Don’t miss Vadstena on your journey along the Göta Canal. This is perhaps where you should make your two-day stop.

Forsvik

The first lock of the Göta Canal was built here in 1813. Interesting sights: Forsviks Bruk with exhibitions and the wheel steamer Eric Nordevall II. 12 guest places.

Göta Kanal Charter recommends: A place that many pass without stopping, which is a shame because Forsvik has so much to offer in addition to Forsviks Bruk and the wheel steamer. Forsviks Mat & Café, Kanalbutiken 5 Knop and new for this year – the shop Sail In below the lock with maritime products, ice cream etc.

Reedbeds

Vassbacken has a marina, campsite, cottages and hostel. Café with food dishes, summer entertainment.

Göta Kanal Charter recommends: For those who do not need to bunker, Vassbacken can be a nice alternative to Töreboda. Child friendly.

Töreboda

Guest harbor in Töreboda at the pier on both sides of the canal. Close to shops and other services. Pool area in the campsite at the guest harbor. Adventure golf and skate track.

Göta Kanal Charter recommends: Heading east, towards Söderköping, a good place to look over the supplies.

North Mill

Guest harbor at the Norrkvarn lock area, near Lyrestad. Those who come in their own boat can dock in the guest harbor in the middle of the experience area. Here you will find the Children’s Mini Canal, Norrqvarn Hotell & Konferens with a restaurant and a brewery.

Göta Kanal Charter recommends: One of the most child-friendly marinas.

Sjötorp

Guest harbor in the shipyard basin above lock 2/3 in Sjötorp. Fuel at the quay: diesel (card machine). Also 10 places between locks 1 and 2/3.

Göta Kanal Charter recommends: A cozy community with shop, fish sales, food and cafes, summer shopping etc.

Norsholm

Guest harbor east of the lock with guest harbor service in Captain Bille’s Café with STF hostel, restaurant with full rights. Fuel station at the quay: diesel. Sale of LPG. 20 guest places.

Göta Kanal Charter recommends: Forgot to stock up? A few steps to ICA Nära with generous opening hours. You and the weather choose whether you spend the night here or in the next guest harbor Berg.

Malfors

The guest harbor is located at Malfors bridge in Ljungsbro, within walking distance to Cloetta’s chocolate shop.

Göta Kanal Charter recommends: Alternative to staying overnight in Berg. Walking distance to the restaurants in Berg and not least to Cloetta’s factory sales of candy of the highest quality.

Borenshult

Guest harbor below Borenshults lock stairs in Lake Boren. Borenshult’s lock staircase is the canal’s second largest with 5 locks and a level difference of 15.3 meters and is a very popular destination in Motala.

Göta Kanal Charter recommends: If you find reason not to stop in Borensberg on your way west, or if you go east, think that it is enough after the downward closure in Borenshults lock stairs, this guest harbor offers a quiet and comfortable stop for rest and overnight stay.

Motala port

Motala guest harbor is the canal’s largest with 50 guest places in central Motala. The harbor is home to the Göta Canal Company’s headquarters and Motala Motor Museum with about 170,000 visitors a year. Several cafés and restaurants, summer cottages.

Göta Kanal Charter recommends: A natural stop whether you go west or east. Lots to do, lots to see. Shopping, food, Systembolaget, sights of all kinds. In Södra hamnen, just under a nautical mile from Motala harbor, there is fuel and LPG.

Karlsborg

The Göta Canal guest harbor in Karlsborg has places inside and outside the road bridge. The main attraction is Karlsborg Fortress, which offers guided tours and gold hunting for children.

Göta Kanal Charter recommends: Karlsborg is often well visited. There are alternatives if it is crowded in the canal company’s guest harbor. There is Carlsborgs Segelsällskap’s (CSS) guest harbor inside the bridge with electricity, barbecue area, toilets, shower, bicycles etc. for 180 SEK/night, and Stenbryggans guest harbor with 40 places outside the bridge (south of Rödesund), electricity, toilets, shower and proximity to Karlsborg Fortress, fee 100 SEK/night. The latter is recommended for those who go east during the ordering season so you must cross the bridge before closing.

Peat bog

The guest harbor is located in Tåtorp on Lake Viken. In Tåtorp there is the only hand-operated lock in the West Götaland region. Nice garden café. Walking distance to the highest point of the canal Lanthöjden.

Göta Kanal Charter recommends: Perfect for a lunch stop after or before the trip across Lake Viken.

Jonsboda

Guest harbor at Jonsboda bridge, east of Töreboda. There is access to a sauna house. Summer open café and waffle house, camping cabins, parking lot.

Göta Kanal Charter recommends: For those who want a little more peace and quiet, another alternative to Töreboda. You have access to a wood-fired sauna.

Hajstorp

The guest harbor at Hajstorp locks, which is a popular destination on the Göta Canal with several locks on a short stretch, café and crafts.

Göta Kanal Charter recommends: Nice guest harbor with fresh service facility.

Lyrestad

The guest harbor in Lyrestad is a popular meeting place for boaters, motorists and cyclists. In the summer, the local history society displays its museum in the harbor warehouse. Here you can see what a country store looked like at the turn of the century.

Göta Kanal Charter recommends: Forgot to do some shopping in Sjötorp? Here’s a chance to replenish your supplies at the village shop, or lubricate your gizzard at the excellent restaurant at Pensionat Åsgården, or visit the nearby pizzeria.
